Cosmetic Dentistry - Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns which are sometimes called caps, is another widely preferred form of cosmetic dentistry, These are certain types of restoration that are necessitated when other procedures like bonding are not working. Inlays and onlays are almost like a partial crown and are generally made of porcelain. An inlay is used in place of filling and onlay is made to cover just more that the tooth’s surface. Onlay also can be used in replacing a filling and coating the tip of the tooth in case of more than one teeth.

Crown brings back your tooth’s function, improves the aesthetic look and enhance the overall dental health of mouth which is very vital for effective cosmetic dentistry..

Cosmetic dentist on your first dental visit shapes and moulds your teeth structure for a better fit of the crown. After preparation of the tooth, the dentist sends the tooth structure impressions to the lab for further restorations. During this period in consultation with your dentist one can choose the shape, size and color of the crown. During this period a temporary crown is inserted till the permanent restorations are reconstructed in the lab.

During the next visit, your dentist will remove the temporary restoration and replace it with new crown. Adhesive agents are used to permanently secure the crown once they are adjusted and fit into your mouth.

When are Dental Crowns Used?

Certain cases require the dentist to perform a root canal before insertion of dental crowns. If this is inevitable then the dentist will have to construct the dental crown foundation after root canal therapy. This is also commonly known as “post-and-core” foundation.

In addition to what is explained earlier, the dentist also X-ray and examine before your tooth preparation on your first visit. A local anesthetics is administered to numb your tooth and gum tissue before preparation of your dental crown. The tooth is then adequately adjusted and prepared to make enough space for the crown.

A temporary acrylic crown covers the tooth when the actual tooth is being developed with the help of impressions and X-rays made earlier. These temporary crowns are worn until your actual crown is prepared by the dental lab.

Permanent crown is prepared by the dental lab from the impressions received from the dentist. Usually dental labs take around two to three weeks and earlier in some cases depending on the turn around time. Certain dentists offer CEREC crowns which can be made in the first visit at the dental hospital itself.

During second visit, dentist takes out the temporary dental crown and check for the fitment of the permanent one. If crown is a good fit and color, a local anesthetic is administered before fitting the permanent crown.
