ENAMEL SHAPING (RECONTOURING)
Enamel shaping or
recontouring is that part of
cosmetic dentistry
process wherein natural teeth is contoured to enhance the overall aesthetics of
the face and mouth. Enamel shaping can be used to modify slightly crowded or
uneven teeth or when teeth appear to be very long. The
results of
removing
or contouring enamel can be seen immediately.
Since enamel cannot be replaced, any enamel shaping should be carried out with
caution.
Dental Recontouring is a
very effective process to correct
minor imperfections, which can also improve the overall
dental health by removing
crevices or overlaps wherein plaque or tartar has accumulated. Even though recontouring is
effective it is not considered a substitute for
veneers or
bonding. If your teeth
has major imperfections like a deep chip or fracture or
large
fillings from fillings done earlier, then enamel shaping procedure is not
recommended.
Also certain additional corrections may also be needed along with enamel shaping
process like crowded teeth may require
braces. The one benefit of enamel shaping, which if carried out along with
bonding,
gives quick results
and a painless experience.
As far as your
teeth is concerned, one should have realistic expenctation, since dental recontouring
also has its limitations. Whenever the imperfections cannot be removed with recontouring,
the dentist may
need to combine the treatment with bonding wherein a
composite resin
patches up fractures, chips or cavities.
Dental recontouring
can usually be done
without anesthetic as it doesn't affect the living pulp of the tooth. The
treatment can be carried out in one or two visits to a cosmetic dentist.
